We're
well in to the off season now. Helicopters are once again a fading
memory. We are getting settled in the new cabin once again, and eBay
listing is hard and furious.
Finally,
after three years since our home went away, this place feels like
home. Finally, after a lifetime of large living, I feel
comfortable in this smaller space.
This
cabin has it's issues, like every cabin has it's issues but you learn
to adapt to them. We needed storage space to make the kitchen
workable here. We have lots of cast iron! This is the portable
solution I came up with. An island, cabin style.
Yes, we have snow. |
The
frame was fun. It's made from 4x4's and 2x4's. The frame was joined
with pocket hole screws and it is sturdy. The top is and old square
table top we found a year or so ago. We never knew what to do with
it but knew it was too nice to throw away. A little circular saw and
sander work and it's a brand new Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse table top.
As
far as food storage goes, this is Alaska where canning still reigns
supreme. By processing our food it lasts much longer than if we were
to leave everything in the fridge. Like most households, about 1/3
of that stack of food you see would have been wasted had we not
jarred it.
It's
been a long process and I still have a long way to go.
This
is life in Alaska.
