Projects, Projects Projects

As promised in an earlier post, there has been a flurry of activity here in the cabin...living room...studio...dog house of Arctic Artique.

Many projects have been completed, some still wait for us, and others were created out of very thin air. Kitty Wolf and I have been beyond busy. We are beat, but it was worth it.

What you are looking at are several projects that have either come to life or finished their time in purgatory, only to come to life again.

This beautiful liquor cabinet is yet another cast off that Kitty found. It is seeing much better days now than when we dragged it home with us. All surfaces were thoroughly cleaned and sanded, doors were repaired and a decorative back splash was even added. That was the biggest hold up to this project, and was also the most fun part of it once I finally got on it. A coat of Golden Oak stain gives the base for the rich color of this vintage oak cabinet. Two layers of shellac sealed the stain in. To finish this classic, we used a product that was new to us, given by a new friend. Gold Wax by Country Chic Paint was buffed in to give the rich look you see. Not only on the outside, wax was used on the interior trim as well. The felt lining trimmed by decorative strips all around give this cabinet a regal look. Thank you Pascale from The Crafty Tulip. Now guys, before you say anything, yes I now shop at The Crafty Tulip here in Fairbanks. It is located in a local antique shop so we can look and get new ideas for old things while we find our supplies. What can I say...she has a very good product!

Hanging above the cabinet next to Harriet is a faux bronzed child's boot entitled 'Future's Hope'. This was made in conjunction with 'Eternal Patriot' as a tribute to LaVoy Finicum's grand children. Mounted on rough cut Alaska Spruce this is tough, durable, and has a fantastic rustic look and feel. Rope from an old hammock was used to ring the edges and for the cross which is mounted on an oval that once held an old 60's decoupaged Love Is... plaque that had seen better days. Again, gold wax was used to highlight this piece, giving all of the roping a bright but subtle look. The arrangement surrounding the candle holder came from our local thrift store a while back and had been waiting to come to life at some point. The carved wooden flowers represent the grandchildren yet to blossom but will become full blown roses some day. The rope cross with it's blue vintage bead represents where he is now and the faith he bestowed upon his family. Notice the small bee at the toe of the boot which came from an old, old Avon bottle in the shape of a bee hive. This is to represent the gift of knowledge to the roses, that when properly applied and remembered will help the young rose buds bloom to maturity. What better way to find a new home for this small decorative than to signify new life for old things in this unique display piece.

As I mentioned earlier, this has been an extremely busy week for both Kitty and myself. We are bushed, but continue on. We have more that we want you to see. Thank you for visiting Arctic Artique. Feel free to check back and see what we have been up to. There always seems to be something wonderful happening in our cabin!
