It's
been a while since Arctic Artique has been able to show any of our
new creations. Life seems to have a habit of getting in the way.
I'm happy and proud to say a project that has been on hold for quite
a while is now ready for unveiling!
What
you are looking at is a turn of the century wooden dog mushing
harness that was built to transit over the Chilkoot Trail way back
during Alaska's gold rush days. This harness was made for eight sled
dogs to pull the musher and his supplies over the mountain during the
harsh winter conditions of Alaska.
This
harness is what we believe to be the only surviving full set complete
with it's leather left in existence. We have seen partial sets, one
or two sticks with or without the metal clips on the ends, but none
still with leather and none as complete as this set.
What
better way to display a beautiful piece of history than with Alaskan
rough cut spruce boards. I happened upon an old pile of this awesome
lumber that was going to melt into the ground it came from when the
idea hit me. Build a box worthy of displaying something this
gorgeous. Well, here it is. One eighth inch plexiglass covers this
unique find of Kitty's. This looks to be the perfect way for all to
admire while keeping curious hands from the fragile leather.
We
have a very fitting wall to display our harness on. If you will
remember, Musher's Cafe is a small restaurant in Fairbanks that will
teaching adults with learning challenges to live, survive and thrive
in a public work environment. It is a heck of an idea that is well
past its time. Thank you Bill for being the type of person to take
on a project such as this!
All
will be able to see this relic of the past, but in order to do so
will have to order a Reuben or other sandwich of their choice. Make
mine with corned beef and lot's of sauerkraut plus don't forget the
1000 Island dressing!
