Check
out this pair of Polynesian tourist masks. Made in Philippines is
what I believe the tag said. They were hand carved but mass produced
for the tourist trade. Just a plain wood, they looked kind of cool.
Kitty
and I acquired them as always because someone else got tired of them.
They probably hung around in somebodies garage for years. What they
made go away, we had fun with. Last Halloween, we had them hanging
in the trees by our driveway. Christmas lights were strung through
all the holes. Our neighbors didn't know what to think. That was
fun!
Snow
came, we brought them inside and set them aside for the time being.
The following spring Kitty had me painting some furniture. We had
some extra chalk black so black they became.
Again,
they sat around during the move and bazaars and eBay store and
helicopter and everything else. Until a few days ago when they
resurfaced while I was packing things for our next move.
That's
when it struck me. I had just gone through Kitties paint drawer
while trying to reorganize. These were ornate but lacking something.
Color. I got Kitties okay and the kid with the crayons went to
work.
The
paint was all leftover from earlier projects. The paintbrushes had
seen better days but I made them work for me. Yeah, our stock is
starting to get low. Even the hangers on back are repurposed. The
wire came from other frames, the screws have been in a bag in a junk
bin since the 70's, and the hangers are pop tops from four Peace Tea
cans.
Peace
Tea is good stuff. It's more natural than other commercial teas and
the taste is awesome. Beats a coke any day of the week. There's my
commercial endorsement for the day.
This
was a fun project. In the end, we have a one of a kind pair of
tourist masks that will be the highlight of someone's Tiki bar this
summer! Oh yeah, we made the teeth glow-n-the-dark.
