A
Real Alaska Winter
or
Let
It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
Global
warming, climate change, polar vortex, Siberian Express, and on and
on. You've heard all of these terms. They are all favorites of our
tv meteorologists, otherwise known as The Weatherman!
The
last several years, winters have been mild here in Alaska. Not much
snow and temperatures more fitting the Lower 48. We had so little
snow and such warm temps that our big winter races, The Yukon Quest
and The Iditarod have had to change their routes the last couple of
years. Not so this winter.
Already,
we have had a string of -35 degree days and nights. We have had at
least a foot of snow for about a month now. That is until yesterday.
We are in the middle of the biggest snow event here in the Interior
that has been seen for several years. It started snowing about 1:00
yesterday afternoon. So far, we have received about 12” of snow
with more on the way. Official forecasts have called for 15” while
the educated rumor mill has speculated at least 22” of snow by the
end of this event. The wind is blowing and we are seeing snow drifts
everywhere.
Snow
plows are working overtime and cars are piling up in the ditches.
The snow isn't that hard to drive on but most people forget that they
have to slow down. You can tell every winter who is from down south!
Our
tent is beginning to look like an igloo and we have about 2 feet of
snow on our roof. We have watched the weather reports from the
Continental United States and have just had to laugh a bit at how
this itty bitty event has been sensationalized. You would think that
Alaska has entered a new ice age from the reports we have seen.
Truth be known, it's just another day in the Arctic!
Anyway,
we still have electricity at this point, which is always a good
thing! Kitty and I are snug in our cabin working on projects.
Speaking of projects, what do you do when you can't do anything else?
Why, you build a doll house of course. We found this kit that has
been passed from house to house since 1983. Nobody ever dared to
take on this project. I wasn't sure about it at first but am having
a blast.
Well,
it's time to go rake another load of snow off the tent, so I will
leave you for now. I don't even have to bundle up. It's 20 degrees
outside. Tee shirt weather! Stay warm everybody!
