Just about the time I get my posts running regularly, it seems I disappear again.  I have a few minutes now so I’ll give you an update of what’s going on with me now.

The last time I posted, I had just made a sale at one of our local holiday bazaars.  It was nice having someone appreciate Kitty’s work.  Unfortunately, Musher’s Dream was the only sale we made other than a few small items, mainly her awesome chocolate chip banana bread.  About half of the loaves sold, we ate the rest.  People just didn’t know what they were missing.

We were counting on good sales from both bazaar dates to help pay the bills, but it just didn’t happen.  I was standing in line at Carl’s Jr. to apply for work flipping burgers when I got a phone call from my summer employer, Aerotech.  They needed my help with an inspection and some maintenance that was due on my helicopter.  Long story short, I am now in Clovis, New Mexico finishing up my work on N32AT.  It couldn’t have come at a better time.  The money had run out again and I had no idea how I would pay the next round of incoming bills.

For someone who has worked since the age of 14 and always paid every bill on time, this is a new and unsettling experience…living by the seat of my pants and never knowing when  and if I can make the next payment.  May 1st and next year’s fire season are an awfully long ways away.  We’ll make it somehow.  I’ve been here almost two weeks and will head back to Alaska on Wednesday, most likely.  It was good to be able to work again, but I am ready to go home.  We have another bazaar to work on the 10th of next month.

Now, on to better things!  I met a new friend yesterday.  Meet Whitey, a little short haired solid black puppy.  Whitey showed up yesterday around noon or so.  No collar, scrawny, and just starting to get dirty.  He came in for a while, then left.  We thought he moved on down the road.

Not so.  He showed up again around dinner time and has been with us ever since.  He has the look that somebody got tired of him and dumped him off.  He hadn’t eaten in a few days.  He woofed down the food we gave him.  He does have a few manner issues but he is going to be a great dog.
Don't Show The Boss This Picture!
The other mechanic and I didn’t really know what to do with him other than try and make him comfortable for a while.  I sent a picture and text to one of the girls that works here to see if I could find a no-kill shelter in the area to take him to come Monday.  She wouldn’t have anything to do with that. It looks like Whitey will be going home with her after work on Monday.  She has already said she would take him and find a good home for him.  She doesn’t believe in the shelters here.  Thank you Sarah!  I would take him home with me but there is too much to be done to get a dog ready to fly 4000 miles.  Plus, he would be a snack for Ally the Wonder Dog, our husky who would most likely be pretty jealous with him around.
We see this in Alaska all the time.  People come to our state, have to have a pet, and then decide it’s time to move back to the lower 48.  The first thing to go (or stay) is the animal.  That is not fair to that living creature that has bonded and become attached to the family it is with.  People do not realize that these animals have feelings just like we do.  They can be very emotionally affected losing their family.  It’s not right.  If you are thinking about getting a pet, remember than an animal is a lifetime commitment.
I’m enjoying Whitey while I can.  I have t0 trust that the people I have met here will do what is best for him.  I believe they will.  I will be home in just a few more days, ready to start working toward the next round of bills coming our way.  Until then, enjoy a few pictures of Whitey!

If, by chance, there is someone reading this post from the New Mexico area and you are interested in giving Whitey a good forever home, comment on my blog.  Let’s see if we can help him out!
