Galena Camp

Over the next several months I am going to be living and working here in Galena supporting our wild land firefighters.  Even though we will be busy, there will still be quite a bit of down time.  With my being here and away from Kitty Wolf, our art and wood projects are on the back burner for the summer.

I am going to do my best to show you what remote work and life is like when you don’t have a Seven Eleven or Home Depot around every corner.  Everywhere I look here, I see recycled, repurposed, and reused stuff.  This is making do with anything and everything you’ve got, starting with our living quarters.
These big and very boxy buildings are commonly known here as ‘The Barracks.’  In actuality, they are military barracks.  These two buildings are not just from the Korean War era; these buildings stood and were used in Korea during the war.  They have been around a while.

I don’t know when, but at some point in time they were dismantled and shipped back to the US.   Somewhere down in the lower 48 they were reassembled and used for a while, only to be disassembled again and shipped just about as far north as you can go.  This is where these two relics have stood for years and this is where these two relics will continue to stand.
They are still in good condition all things considered.  Kitty wants me to show you all my room also but I will have to save that for another day.  Yes, I am a slob and I will clean before I take pictures.

The small yellow building is our green house that will contain plants very soon.  The brown shack building is our sauna.  I was going to show the inside but someone was using it.  I won’t invade their privacy but want you to see what Alaska ingenuity can create out of nothing.

Well, keep watching and keep reading.  This should be a fun summer.  As a side note, our blog had its 3000th view today!  We must be doing something right so I would like to say a quick thank you to everyone for watching and reading about our lives and what Kitty and I enjoy!
