Nature at it's Finest

As I said before, I have had an interesting life! This picture, I took back in 2009. Has anyone ever seen a volcano, other than on a National Geographic special? I didn't see the eruption, but I was fortunate enough to see the aftermath. This is Mount ReDoubt, an active volcano situated across the inlet from Kenai, Alaska. The company that I worked for at the time had a helicopter operating in this area that I just happened to need to do some maintenance on. It is an awesome sight to see a mountain with smoke and steam coming out of it. In case you are wondering, the helicopter in the foreground is a Messerschmidt Bolkow Blome BO 105 twin engine turbine powered machine. It is powered by a pair of Allison M250-C20 Reverse Flow turbine engines. Allison was purchased and these are now know as Rolls Royce engines. Pretty fancy, eh? This is a smaller utility helicopter that has quite the power and maneuverability for it size. It was also my favorite type of helicopter to maintain. If you have ever seen the Red Bull aerobatic helicopter and wondered what it was, well you now know. It's nothing more than an old MBB BO105. As I said before, great machine.

Interesting, you thought I would be talking about volcano's but got a small aviation lesson instead. Amazing how that works. By the way, I do tend to ramble at times. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

  1. Nice pic Scott. The only Volcano I have seen post eruption was Mt. Saint Hellenes down in WA state. I did not see it until they opened it back up. That was back in the early 80's

    1. Thank you Darren! Judging by the earthquakes we are having down it that area currently, there is a good possibility we will be having another eruption soon. I don't know the number but Alaska has many volcano's down in that area.
