To Alaska!
Good
news. My helicopter left Clovis, New Mexico today! I will be
following it tomorrow with more layover time than flight time. Go
Alaska Airlines! First to Dallas at 0 dark thirty on Boutique Air
which is a small commuter airline in the region. Then after just a
bit of a wait (4½ hours) it's on to Seattle. One more four hour
wait then it's on to home...Fairbanks, Alaska! I am ready. It was
great to get my feet wet and start working again but it is hot here.
I must be Alaskan now. 80* and I was burning up. Mosquito state,
here I come. My helicopter is loaded down for bear. We have
everything we need to operate in the bush for the summer. You could
fit maybe one more box in the cabin but that would be about all.
Such is the life of us helicopter aviation types. I've done this
kind of work for so long that it just seems to be natural now. I've
got a kid for my pilot this year. This will be her first real trip
as a helicopter pilot out on her own. Do I have concerns with her
being so new to this industry. Absolutely not! I worked with this
young lady a couple of years ago when she first got her mechanics
license at a different company. She was new and like any other kid
she could be annoying to me. She was sharp though. She was
conscientious and wanted to learn the job the right way. If
anything, she was over conscientious. I ain't got a dog in that
fight though. I've been that way most of my career. Although it can
lead to higher stress levels, I would rather be more conscientious
than less in this business. A helicopter can't pull over to a cloud
and park if it has a problem. I have every confidence in this young
pilot. It is going to be a good summer!
